Founded in 1837 and ranked in the top 1% worldwide, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is the oldest contemporary university of the Eastern Mediterranean region and Europe’s largest university.
The university’s excellent Mathematical Department received Gömböc 1837, carrying the year of foundation of the university, as a gift from the Hungarian Embassy in Athens.
Gömböc 1837 was handed over to the university on december 11th 2019 by His Excellency Erik Haupt, Ambassdor of Hungary in Athens. On behalf of the university, the gift was received by Vice Rector Prof. Athanasios Tsakris, Dean Prof. Ioannis Emmanouil and Chairman Prof. Apostolos Bournetas (shown on the top picture). The Gömböc ceremony was coupled with the opening of a geometry exhibition, and students from the Kodály Institute in Athens sang Hungarian folk songs.
