The graduate studies in mathematics at New York University are conducted at the famous Courant Institute, founded in 1935 by Richard Courant. The home of the Institute is the iconic Warren Weaver Hall in the southern part of Manhattan.
The Courant Institute is broadly regarded as the world’s foremost reserach center in applied mathematics. Its directors have been, without exception, mathematicians of the highest distinction, among them three Abel-laureates (Peter Lax, Louis Nirenberg, Srinivasa S. R. Varadhan).
The Institute, led by director Russel E. Caflish (upper picture) decided to put the indivdual Gömböc 1935, carrying the year of foundation of the Institute, on permanent exhibit in the Library.
The production of Gömböc 1935 was supported by Mr Ottó Albrecht.
