Until now, the Gömböc was presented only to two institutions: the Hungarian Technical Mseum and the Library of the Budapest University of Technology. Arnold is the first individual to own a Gömböc, since Auguts 20th Gömböc 001 belongs to him. Professor Arnold was glad to receive this present and in return he offered a new conjecture which might enhance the deeper understanding of the Gömböc.
The inventors, Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi were decorated with the Knight’s Cross of the Republic of Hungary.
*V. I. Arnold is one of the best known active mathematicians, the most cited Russian scientist. His career started early as a prodigy: as a teenager he solved Hilbert’s 13th problem while beinga student of A.N. Kolmogorov. He is probably best known for the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory, describing the stability of the Solar System. In 1981 a planet was named after him. He has been decorated with numerous mathematical prizes, including the Wolf proze. Since 1991 he is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, currently he is working at the Steklov Mathematical Institute and the University of Paris.
