The world’s largest professional mathematical organization, the American Mathematical Society launched 10 years ago the series “Mathematical Moments” with the goal to popularize mathematics to a broad audience. The monthly series consists of posters, accompanied occasionally by podcasts and other online materials. Beyond the poster published on the Society’s website, physical copies are being sent out to a wide range of American schools and universities. The 133rd poster and the accompanying podcast of Mathematical Moments describes the Gömböc. The poster is illustrated by the award-winning photo of Profeessor Alain Goriely. The Gömböc appears in this series alongside with such widely publicized mathematical results as weather-forcasting, routing traffic through the internet, the structure of galaxies, quantum computing, the theory of the bitcoin or tsunami-warning.
