The Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics (FoCM) created the Stephen Smale prize whose objective is to recognize the work of one or two young mathematicians in the areas at the heart of the Society’s interest and to help to promote their integration among the leaders of the scientific community. The first Stephen Smale Prize was awarded at the Budapest meeting in 2011. The Board of Directors of the Society decided that the physical insignia of the prize should be an individual Gömböc, designed for this very purpose. In 2014, at the Montevideo meeting the Society awarded two outstanding young mathematicians with the Smale Prize: Mark Braverman and Carlos Beltran. The Prize was given to Carlos Beltran by Teresa Krick, Chair of FoCM and Albert Cohen, member of the FoCM Board and of the 2nd Smale Prize committee. Unfortunately, Mark Braverman was unable to attend due to personal circumstances, the conference applauded to his achievements in his absence. The manufacturing of the individual Gömböc pieces for the Stephen Smale prize is made possible by the generous support of Mr. Ottó Albrecht.
