On July 7th 2022, the world’s largest technology and science museum, Deutsches Museum re-opened 19 of its permanent exhibitions after a complete refurbishment which lasted several years.
Among the 19 new exhibitions is the Mathematical Collection which also underwent a major expansion and complete re-design under the direction of trustee Ms Katja Rasch (in top picture). The new, undoubtedly world-class exhibition has a strong emphasis on geometry. In the showcase where the difficulty of mathematical proof is highlighted, the individual Gömböc 2021 is on display.
The number 2021 was chosen by the Museum as the expected date for the re-opening of the mathematical collection and Gömböc 2021 was manufactured and shipped to Munich already in 2021. However, COVID-related problems delayed the opening by half year. Gömböc 2021 not only appears in the hardcover catalogue, but it alaso became part of the digital collection. The Museum also received a red Gömböc Light model which, at guided tours, is being offered to visitors to play with.
The production of Gömböc 2021, 90mm tall, made from AlMgSi-alloy, has been sponsored by Mr Ottó Albrecht.
Christoph Pöppe reported on the new exhibition in the science blog of Spektrum der Wissenschaft:
