One of the world’s top engineering schools, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (also called briefly EPFL) has a unique collection of mathematical models and scientific instruments. Located in the iconic Cubotron building, the collection hosts over 1000 valuable instruments and models.
From now on, showcase BSP14 will serve as the home of Gömböc 1853, carrying the year of foundation of EPFL as serial number. Our upper picture shows the placement ceremony, with participants (from left to right): Ion-Gabriel Mihailescu, postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory for the history of science and technology, Jérôme Baudry, assistant professor of history of science and technology and Curator of the Collection, Véronique Mauron-Layaz, manager of EPFL Culture and part-time curator of the Collection and Frédéric Kaplan, dean of the College of Humanities at EPFL.
The production of Gömböc 1853 (standing 90mm tall, made from AlMgSi alloy) was supported by Ottó Albrecht.
