Founded in 2020, the Yanqi Lake Beijing Institute of Mathematical Science and Applications (BIMSA) is already regarded as one of the foremost mathematical research centers in China. Led by Fields medalist and Wolf Prize laureate Shing-Tung Yau and also having Fields medalist Caucher Birkar among its faculty, it is attracting top talent both from China and abroad. The year 2023 has special significance for BIMSA: its brand-new campus, at Huairou Science City in Beijing opened on July 17th 2023, meanwhile BIMSA organized between June 12th – 28th the first International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS), a conference of worldwide significance.
Professor Yau decided to celebrate this successful year by putting Gömböc 2023 on permanent exhibit at his office at BIMSA. The Hungarian Foreign Ministry kindly offered its help in the transportation of the sensitive object which was handed over in Beijing by Ms Lujza Anna Honecz, acting director of the Liszt Institute in Beijing to Professor Liu Wei, professor at the National University of Defense Technology, Changsha, China.
Subsequently, Professor Liu took G2023 to the Yanqi Lake Sunrise Kempinski Hotel,
where many prominent guests of ICBS were staying. He showed G2023 first to Wolf Prize laureate Sir Michael Berry who was quite happy with G2023 and explained it first to Nobel laureate David Gross and then to Jonathan Keating, Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosphy at the University of Oxford.
Subsequently, Professor Liu transported Gömböc 2023 to BIMSA where, in the company of Sir Michael Berry, he handed it over to Professor Yau (top picture), who placed it into a custom-made showcase, located in his spacious, brand-new office at BIMSA. G2023 is the first-ever individual Gömböc model to be on permanent exhibit at an academic institution in China.
The production of Gömböc 2023, standing 90mm tall, made form AlMgSi-alloy, was generously supported by Mr Ottó Albrecht.
