Owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and operated by an independend editorial board, the MIT Technology Review is one of the world’s most respected popular science magazines. Established in 1899, the magazine has been repeatedly voted in the USA as the most reliable source in technology and innovation. When other magazines moved their entire operations online, MIT Technology Review doubled down on the print issues, creating a high-profile series of bi-monthly volumes which have been expanded from a summary of articles into a small book fucusing on a single subject. The November/December 2023 volume was dedicated to “Hard Problems”. In a Letter to the readers, editor-in-chief Mat Honan summarizes what he considers the most pressing problems of our times and how this volume addresses these questions. Beyond technology, the volume also offers some profiles, including one on computer scientist Manuel Blum and another one on Gabor Domokos, one of the inventors of the Gömböc.
The latter article (appearing on page 19 of the print edition), written by Elise Cutts, also features an image of the first phyisical model of the Gömböc. The article not only appeared on the magazine’s social media channels, it was also featured on the twitter and facebook channels of Quanta Magazine.
