With a population of 7 million, Dar es Salaam is not only Tanzania’s, but also East Africa’s largest city. Founded in 1866 by Majid bin Said, the first sultan of Zanzibar, today the city boasts 9 universities, among which Ardhi University is ranked as the country’s #3 institution of higher education. The University decided to put Gömböc 1866, carrying the year of foundation of the city, on permanent display at its central administrative building.
Gömböc 1866 reached its destination with the invaluable help of H.E. Zsolt Mészáros, ambassador of Hungary in Nairobi and Honorary Consul Mr. Solomon Obedie Kimaro. Before the placement ceremony Dr Beatrice Tarimo of Ardhi University gave a comprehensive presentation about the fundamental properties of the Gömböc as well as the cultural significance of this exhibit.
Vice Chancellor Professor Evaristo Liwa personally placed Gömböc 1866 into its custom-made showcase where it rests on a marble plate.
After the ceremony a group picture was taken (our top image) where Gömböc 1866 is being held by the president of the Ardhi University Students Organization. In the group, beyond the Vice Chancellor and his Deputies, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, other members of Staff and students appear.
On May 22nd 2023, His Excellency Zsolt Mészáros, ambassador of Hungary in Nairobi visited Ardhi University to see the G1866 exhibit. On this occasion the ambassador met with the leadership of the University to discuss potential opportunities for joint programs with Hungarian universities.
The production of Gömböc 1866 was sponsored by Mr Ottó Albrecht.
